Facade & Interior Design by TE-EL
Photographed by Studio Periphery

Set in the central north of Singapore. TE-EL has redesigned the interior and the facade of an existing terrace house for a family returning from overseas.

Constructed as rows of terrace houses, the home suffers from a monotonous facade and apathetic spaces, a lack of privacy due to proximity to neighbours, an under-utilised front porch, and a clear distinction between the front and back of the house.

To address that, we rearrange the dwelling spaces to allow each area to have a connection to the external landscape. The ground level, where most communal activities are held, was designed like an open pavilion; full-height glass doors and vertical timber frames open the interior spaces to the new front garden. The cascading ferns from the balcony above also act as a green screen to shield the open space from its immediate neighbours/passersby removing the need for privacy treatments. The back-of-house services were also relocated to the rooftop to allow a green stretch to be injected at the rear. The result is a pavilion-like house that nature becomes an integral part of the interior.
